성삼문은 자신의 죽음을 재촉하는 요란한 북소리를 들으며 수레 앞에 잠시 멈추어 서서 남산을 바라보다가

해가 지는 인왕산 쪽으로 고개를 돌렸다.

 

둥둥둥 북소리 인명을 재촉하는데

머리를 돌려보니 해 뉘엇 저무는데

머나먼 황천길엔  주막 하나 없으려니

오늘밤은 누구 집에서 묵고갈 것인고

"Distant Drums" ~~~  &  Velvet Voice~~~

 

숫사슴 머리 양쪽에서는 뼈가 바깥으로 자라나는데 처음 자라나는 부분은 피가 흐르기 때문에

말랑말랑한 것이  따스한 촉감은  천하제일 녹용(Velvet)이다. 이 녹용이 웃자라면 가지를 뻗어

굳어진 천하제일 우아한 녹각(Antler)이 된다. 이 녹각은 자연히 떨어져 나가는데...

 

이처럼 숫사슴 머리에선 매년 한번씩 녹용이 솟아나 자라고 녹각이 되었다가 떨어져 나가는 것을 반복한다.  

얼나나 부드러운지 그  벨베트의 부드러운 촉감을 빌려, 사람의 목소리가 한없이 부드러운 미성이면 그 목소리를

세상은 Velvet Voice라 이른다. 

 

소승(小生)이  소위 그 벨베트 보이스를 처음 접한 것은 나의 청년시절, 미국 가수 Jim Reeves~~~.

은은히 울려퍼지는 머나먼 북소리에 아련히 실려오던 그의  폐기작품  "Distant Drums"이다. 

 

"Distant Drums" is a song which provided US singer Jim Reeves with his only UK No. 1 hit – albeit posthumously – in the United Kingdom in 1966, some two years after his death in a plane crash on 31 July 1964.

"Distant Drums"는 1964년 7월 31일(당시 40세), 미국 가수 Jim Reeves가  비행기 사고로 사망한 약 2년 후인 1966년, Jim Reeves 사후  영국에서 유일하게 1위 히트를 한 노래이다.

 

The song remained in the UK Singles Chart for 25 weeks. The single also topped the US country chart for four weeks, becoming his most successful posthumous single.

이 노래는 영국 싱글 차트에서 25주 동안 남아 있었다. 이 싱글은 또한 미국 컨트리 차트 4주간 1위를 차지하여 그의 가장 성공적인 사후 싱글이 되었다.

 

It was an unexpected achievement for a song that Reeves had recorded for its composer, Cindy Walker, under the impression it was for her private use only and had earlier been dismissed by both the RCA record company and Chet Atkins (a noted guitarist and record producer who worked with Reeves) as unsuitable for wider public release. This may have explained the lower than usual sound quality heard on the original recording of the song.

 

Reeves가 이 노래  작곡가 Cindy Walker를 위해 녹음한 노래로 예상치 못한 성과였다.

이 노래가 Cindy Walker의 개인적 용도라는 인상을 받아  일찌기 RCA 레코드 회사와 Chet Atkins( Reeves와 같이 일한 저명한 기타리스트이자 레코드 프로듀서)에 의해  '더 널리 공개발매함이 부적합 하다' 고 폐기하였다.

 

이것은 노래의 원래 녹음에서 들리는  '평소보다 낮은 음질'을  말해 주는 것일 수 있다.

 

 

However, following Reeves' death, the track was overdubbed with an orchestral backing and released to the public as the version that later climbed up the music charts in both the United States and the UK.

그러나 Reeves가 사망한 후 이 트랙은 오케스트라 반주로 겹쳐 더빙되어 나중에 미국과 영국의 음악 차트에 오른 버전으로 대중에게 공개되었다.

 

Perhaps because of the timing of the song's release (during the summer of 1966), "Distant Drums" attracted attention to the continuation of hostilities in the Vietnam War and an increased public awareness (both in the United Kingdom and the United States) of the difficult conditions faced by U.S. armed personnel fighting in that conflict. This is due to the lyrics implying the wishes of a soldier who wants to marry his beloved (called "Mary" in the song) before he answers the call of battle in some far away land; the "distant drums" which make up the song's title.

 

아마도 노래가 발매된 시기(1966년 여름) 때문에 "Distant Drums"는 베트남 전에서 적대감이 계속되고 전쟁에서 싸우는 미군이 직면한 어려운 상황에 (미.영에서) 증대되는 대중의 인식에 주목을 끌었다.

 

이것은 머나먼 땅 전쟁의 부름에 응하기 전에 사랑하는 사람(노래의 "Mary")과 결혼하고 싶어하는 군인의 소망을 암시하는 가사, 노래 제목 "머나 먼 북소리" 때문이다.
