한 예능프로그램에서 합창단이 불러 감동을 자아내고, 한 오디션프로그램에서는 사연 많은 소년이 불러 관객들 눈물을 훔치게 한 '신의 음성을 듣고 만든 것이 아닐까?'라는 생각이 들 정도로 아름다운 곡 '넬라 판타지아'입니다.

 

1998년 영국의 팝페라 가수 사라 브라이트만이 불렀죠.

 

사실 이 곡의 원곡은 1986년 개봉한 영화 [미션]의 OST 중 하나인 '가브리엘의 오보에'입니다.

원주민에게 선교하러 온 선교사 가브리엘이 자신을 죽이러 온 원주민들을 향해 연주한 곡이죠. 이 곡을 들은 원주민들은 겨누었던 창을 내려놨고, 선교사를 받아들입니다.

 

영화 [미션]에서 이 곡을 들은 사라 브라이트만은 작곡가인 엔니오 모리코네에게 편지를 씁니다. 아름다운 이 곡에 가사를 붙여 부르게 해달라고 말이죠. 하지만 작곡가 엔니오 모리코네는 단번에 거절합니다.

 

'가사가 붙여지면 애초의 음악과 다른 메시지로 전달될 수 있다'

 

하지만 사라 브라이트만은 2개월마다 부탁의 편지를 보냈고, 결국 허락을 받습니다.

 

이렇게 탄생한 '넬라 판타지아'는 이탈리아 작사가 키아라페르라우가 가사를 썼는데요.

영화 [미션]의 주제와 내용을 함축한 듯한 가사로 불후의 명작인 영화 못지않은 불후의 명곡으로 탄생합니다.

 

지난 2020년 7월  6일 영화음악의 거장, 엔니오 모리코네가 세상을 떠났습니다.

Morricone received the Academy Honorary Award in 2007 "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music." He also received 5 Oscar nominations and he won 3 Grammy Awards, 2 Golden Globes as well as numerous other awards, which are too many to mention. A composer of music for the cinema, whose music was an element in itself.
