The thistle is the national flower of Scotland

스코틀랜드의 국화는 엉겅퀴 꽃 (Thistle,ㅅ디슬)이다.

가시잎의 이 꽃은 다양한 예술작품과 장식품에 그려지고 국화로 지정되어

많은 이들의 사랑을 받게 된 데에는 하나의 전설이 있다.

 

옛날에 스코틀랜드가 노르만의 침략을 받았을 때

야습을 준비하던 적군이 신발을 벗고 마지막 남은 스코틀랜드의 성을 향해 이동하면서

한 병사가 엉겅퀴(Thistle)를 밟아 가시에 찔려 아픈 나머지 비명을 질렀고

적의 공격을 알아챈 스코틀랜드인들은 무사히 적들을 물리쳤다는 전설~

 

티슬은 나라를 구한 꽃으로 사랑받게 된 것~.

스코틀랜드에서 불리는 비공식 국가도 엉겅퀴 꽃 노래이다.

Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants

characterised by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae.

 

Prickles occur all over the plant – on the stem and flat parts of leaves.

They are an adaptation that protects the plant from being eaten by herbivores.
