현 14대 달라이 라마, 텐진 갸초(Tenzin Gyatso)는 1935년 7월 6일 중국과의 접경지역인 티베트 동북부 암도 지방의 탁처라는 곳에서 가난한 농부의 아들로 태어났다.

1937년 티베트의 섭정은 13대 달라이 라마의 환생을 찾기 위해 고승들을 지방으로 파견했다.
고승들은 티베트 불교전통에 따라 여러 차례 시험과정을 거쳐 어린 소년 라모를 13대 달라이 라마의 화신임을 인정했다. 이때 달라이 라마의 나이는 만 3살이 되기도 전이었다.

제14대 달라이 라마인 텐진걈초(Bstan-'dzin-rgya-mtsho)는
1935년에 Tibet (티베트) Taktser( སྟག་འཚེར།; ZYPY: Dagcêr meaning 'Place on the Heights' 또는 현 중국의 칭하이 성 Hongya Village (Chinese: 红崖村; pinyin: Hóngyá Cūn; lit.: 'Redcliff Village')에서 티베트인 부모 밑에서 태어났다.
1937년(2세) ,제13대 달라이 라마 둡텐걈초의 환생으로 인증되었다.
1939년(4세), 제14대 달라이 라마로 the town of Bumchen에서 공식 선언되었다.
1940년(5세), 2월22일 제14대 달라이 라마 즉위식 거행.
