Canyonlands National Park is an American national park located in southeastern Utah near the town of Moab. The park preserves a colorful landscape eroded into numerous canyonsmesas, and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their respective tributaries. Legislation creating the park was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on September 12, 1964.

The park is divided into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the combined rivers—the Green and Colorado—which carved two large canyons into the Colorado Plateau. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character.  Author Edward Abbey, a frequent visitor, described the Canyonlands as "the most weird, wonderful, magical place on earth—there is nothing else like it anywhere."

Canyonlands National Park is the largest national park in Utah, covering 527.5 square miles. The park is divided by the Colorado and Green Rivers into three distinct districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, and the Maze. Horseshoe Canyon is also part of Canyonlands National Park but is geographically separate.

The rivers and their tributaries have had a major hand in designing this natural wonder where canyons, mesas, and buttes typify the primitive southern Utah desert landscape yet each section is highlighted by its own unique characteristics.

The Needles section of Canyonlands National Park is just 15 miles south of the Island in the Sky, but 137 miles distant by road. It is so named because of the massive red and white eroded sandstone pillars that extend southwards for many miles, forming a jumbled and hostile landscape, but the area also has many arches, domes, narrow canyons and signs of ancient Indian life such as ruins and rock-carvings.

Canyonlands National Park is located near the city of Moab, in southeastern Utah. The Park is divided into four parts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze and the rivers. It was established in 1964 and it was expanded in 1971, when the Maze, the Land of Standing Rocks, as well as Davis and Lavender canyons were added to the Park.

The park has over 2,000 natural stone arches,

in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins and giant balanced rocks.

Double Arch is in the very popular Windows section of the park.

,Tthe Green River has carved a channel out of rock layers deposited nearly 300 million years ago.

In each of the park's districts, visitors can see the remarkable effects of millions of years of erosion on a landscape of sedimentary rock

Deposition

Most of the rock found in Canyonlands today came from distant mountain ranges like the ancestral Rockies and even the Appalachians. For millions of years, rock was broken down and carried here by wind and water, creating deposits that eventually became distinct layers of sedimentary rock.

The Colorado River

The Colorado River flows from Northern Colorado through the Western US, providing water to most of the metropolitan areas in the Southwest.

Roughly 40 million people rely on the Colorado River for water, half of which live in Southern California.

The Colorado River stretches from Rocky Mountain headwaters in Wyoming and Colorado more than 2,400 kilometers to the Gulf of California in Mexico. On its way, the river supplies water to the residents of the Colorado River Basin and millions of hectares of irrigated farmland and serves to generate affordable power for municipal and rural customers.
