Santa Catarina (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈsɐ̃tɐ kataˈɾinɐ], Portuguese: Estado de Santa Catarinalit.'State of Saint Catherine') is a state in the South Region of Brazil. Of Brazil's 26 states, it is the seventh-smallest state in total area and the 11th most populous.  Additionally, it is the ninth-largest settlement, with 295 municipalities. The state, with 3.4% of the Brazilian population, generates 3.8% of the national GDP.

Santa Catarina is a state in southern Brazil. With a long Atlantic coastline and several islands, it's known for its beaches and mountains. Florianópolis, the capital, has a traditional public market with bars, restaurants and food stalls, and a history museum set in a 19th-century colonial governor’s palace. Florianópolis lies mostly on Santa Catarina Island, which has beach resorts at its northern tip.

Between the early 19th century and mid-20th century, a great number of European immigrants arrived in Santa Catarina;

 

About 50% of these immigrants were from Germany and Austria.

 

The rest came mainly from Italy, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Lithuania, France, Finland, Croatia, Serbia, Estonia, Slovenia and Latvia;

 

these immigrants created an abundance of small, family-held farms, many of which continue to exist in the interior of the state.

Religion

According to the 2010 population census, the population of Santa Catarina is made up of Roman Catholics (73.07%); Protestants or evangelicals (20.4%); spiritists (1.58%); Jehovah's Witnesses (0.74%); Mormons (0.11%) Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church (0.17%); Buddhists (0.05%); new Eastern religious (0.04%), among which the Messianic constitute 0.03%; Islamic (0.01%); Orthodox Christians (0.07%); umbandistas (0.14%); Jewish (0.02%); spiritualists (0.03%); esoteric traditions (0.17%); indigenous (0.03%); candomblezeiros (0.09%) and Hindus (0.01%). Another 3.27% had no religion, including atheists (0.29%) and agnostics (0.6%); 0.29% followed other Christian religions; 0.21% had no determined faith; 0.04% did not know, 0.04% other Eastern religions and 0.03% did not declare.

Education

Portuguese is the official national language, and thus the primary language taught in schools. English, Spanish, and sometimes German are part of the official high school curriculum.

There are more than 105 universities in the state of Santa Catarina.

Geography

The Atlantic coast of Santa Catarina has many beaches, islands, bays, inlets, and lagoons. The humid tropical Serra do Mar coastal forests cover the narrow coastal zone, which is crossed by numerous short streams from the wooded slopes of the Serras.

 

The highest point of the state is the Morro da Boa Vista, at an altitude of 1,827 m, and the second-highest point is the Morro da Igreja, in the town of Urubici, at an altitude of 1,822 m.

São Joaquim National Park (Portuguese: Parque Nacional de São Joaquim) is a National park in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Location

The park is in the Atlantic Forest biome. It covers an area of 48,300 hectares (119,000 acres). It was established by decree on 6 July 1961, and is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. It covers parts of the municipalities of UrubiciOrleansGrão Pará and Bom Jardim da Serra in Santa Catarina. It was originally set aside to preserve exceptional remnant forests of the Paraná pine, Araucaria angustifolia. It is now also popular for alpinism. The park adjoins the 1,330 hectares (3,300 acres) Serra Furada State Park, created in 1980.

São Joaquim National Park is located in Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. Located within the Serra Geral, the National Park is known for its alpine meadows and cloud forests. The terrain is very rugged and includes canyons, large caves, and mountain slopes covered in native forests.

São Joaquim National Park - Santa Catarina

The São Joaquim National Park is a Brazilian conservation unit for integral protection of nature located in the south of the country in the territories of the municipalities of Bom Jardim da Serra, Grão-Pará, Lauro Müller, Orléans and Urubici at the junction of the Serra Catarinense and the Serra do Mar. The park was created in July 1961 to preserve the Araucária forests, still abundant within its 49,800 hectares.

 

The landscapes are of incomparable beauty with postcards such as Pedra Furada, Morro da Igreja which culminates in 1,822 meters, in the northeast region and, in the center of the Park, the very high areas of the Campos de Santa Bárbara region, with altitudes above 1,650 meters. The geological structure dated 133 million years ago is composed of volcanic rocks (basalt) and sandstone formations.
