올드랭사인(Auld Lang Syne)

오래된 친구들을 잊어야 하나,

다시는 마음에 떠올리지 말아야 하나?

그토록 오래된 친구들을

어떻게 잊을 수 있을까?

 

흘러간 옛날을 위하여, 그대여

(…) 우리 다정한 축배를 들자,

흘러간 옛날을 위하여.

그래 너는 너의 술을 사고

나는 내 술을 살 거야!

로버트 번스가 스코틀랜드의 민요를 채록해 곡을 붙인 ‘올드랭사인’은 오늘날 세계인이 애창하는 노래가 되었다. 1896년 배재학당 학생들이 올드랭사인 선율에 애국가 가사를 붙여 부른 뒤 독립운동가들 사이에 국가처럼 불렸고, 훗날 석별가로 번안되어 졸업식장에서 애창되었다.

 

스코틀랜드어 제목 ‘Auld Lang Syne(영어로 old long since)’은 우리말로 “오래전부터”쯤으로 옮길 수 있겠다. 스코틀랜드 사람들은 서로 손을 잡고 올드랭사인을 부르며 한 해를 보내고 새해를 맞는다. 얼마 전 에든버러 대학에서 ‘북토크’를 한 뒤 내 책을 팔고 받은 지폐에 로버트 번스의 초상이 새겨져 있었다. 시인을 기념하는 그들이 부러웠다.
