Province of Palawan,

 

필리핀 서남부에 위치한 필리핀의 주(州). 주도는 푸에르토 프린세사이다.

팔라완섬이 주의 대부분을 차지한다. 미마로파 지방을 구성하는 다섯 개 주 중 하나이기도 하다.

서쪽으로는 남중국해 및 스프래틀리 군도, 동쪽은 술루해, 북동쪽으로는 팔라완 주에 포함된 칼라미안(Calamian) 제도를 거쳐 민도로 섬이 있으며, 남서쪽으로는 말레이시아와 마주하고 있다.

팔라완 본섬 면적은 12,188km²로 남서쪽에서 북동쪽으로 길이가 약 490km에 평균 폭은 40km 정도로 좁은, 가늘고 길게 생긴 섬이다. 필리핀에서 5번째로 큰 섬이다.

섬 자체는 인지도가 낮은 편이며 섬 자체보단 이곳에 자생하는 곤충인 팔라완왕넓적사슴벌레가 더 많이 알려져있다.

 

역사적으로는 2만 2천년에서 2만 4천년 전쯤 보르네오 섬으로부터 도래한 것으로 추정되는 타본인(Tabon man)의 두개골 조각이 팔라완 남서부 케손(Quezon)의 타본 동굴에서 1962년 발견되었다. 2010년 발견된 칼라오 원인[14]이 발견되기 전까진 필리핀에서 가장 오래된 인류의 흔적이었다.

이후로는 원주민들에 의한 바랑가이(Barangay)로 불리우는 부족 공동체 정치 문화 및 해양 문화가 지속되다가, 16세기 초까지는 브루나이의 지배를 받았으며, 16세기 중반 무렵부터 팔라완 남부는 술루 술탄국이, 팔라완 섬 북부는 스페인의 필리핀 도독령이 다스리게 된다. 팔라완 북부 따이따이(Taytay)에 있는 산타 이사벨 요새(Fort Santa Isabel) 등이 이 시대의 유적지.

1898년 미국-스페인 전쟁 이후 필리핀 루손 섬과 마찬가지로 미국의 식민 통치기를 거치며 지역의 중심지가 따이따이에서 쿠요 섬[15], 다시 푸에르토 프린세사로 바뀌었다. 이후에도 일본 제국의 식민통치가 계속되었으며, 제2차 세계 대전 당시 일본군의 포로로 잡혔던 미군이 학살당한 팔라완 학살이 벌어진 장소이기도 하다.

Palawan (/pəˈlɑːwən/, Tagalog: [pɐˈlaʊan]), officially the Province of Palawan (Cuyonon: Probinsya i'ang Palawan; Tagalog: Lalawigan ng Palawan), is an archipelagic province of the Philippines that is located in the region of Mindoro. It is the largest province in the country in terms of total area of 14,649.73 km2 (5,656.29 sq mi). The capital and largest city is Puerto Princesa wherein it is geographically grouped but administered independently from the province. Palawan is known as the Philippines' Last Frontier  and as the Philippines' Best Island.

The islands of Palawan stretch between Mindoro island in the northeast and Borneo in the southwest. It lies between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea.

 

The province is named after its largest island, Palawan Island (09°30′N 118°30′E), measuring 450 kilometers (280 mi) long, and 50 kilometers (31 mi) wide.

In 2019, it was proposed to divide Palawan into three separate provinces, though it was rejected by the local population in a 2021 plebiscite.

Fort Sta. Isabel dates back to 1667. It is one of the oldest Spanish fortresses in the Philippines and also one of the best preserved heritage buildings.
