개요

남중국해에 위치한 암초로 남중국해의 여러 암초들처럼 필리핀과 중국, 그리고 대만이 서로 영유권을 주장하는 영토분쟁 지역이다.

직각삼각형 모양을 띤 산호초이며 수빅 만에서 서쪽으로 198km 정도 떨어진 지점에 위치한다. 주위에 있는 석호를 포함한 전체 면적은 150㎢이며 원둘레는 55km, 수심은 약 15m이다. 산호초 남단에 있는 외해의 길이는 400m, 수심은 9 ~ 11m, 수로의 길이는 360 ~ 400m이다.

 

 역사

공식적인 기록은 1784년에 있다. 당시 동인도 회사의 차를 운반하던 무역선이었던 스카버러 호가 이 부근에서 난파되면서 이 암초가 알려졌으며 이 암초의 이름 역시 이 배의 이름에서 유래한 것이다.

이후 이 암초는 필리핀이 실질적으로 점유하고 있었으나 국공내전 이후 중국과 대만은 1279년 원나라의 천문학자인 곽수경이 이른바 ‘사해측험’(四海測驗)을 진행하던 당시 기준으로 삼았던 섬이 이 섬이었다는 점을 근거로 영유권을 주장한다.

20세기에 미군이 필리핀 기지에 주둔할 무렵, 이 암초는 미군의 사격훈련장으로 사용되었다. 그러나 필리핀의 연이은 반미시위로 인해 1992년 미군이 철수한 후 힘의 공백이 생기자, 중국이 여기를 점령해버렸다.# 미국을 내보낸 것이 결과적으로 중국을 불러들였다는 것.

이후 급속도로 악화되는 중국-필리핀 관계와 남중국해 분쟁과 더불어 같이 엮이며 필리핀과 중국 사이에 이 섬을 둘러싼 대치 상황이 고조되었다.

게다가 중국의 표기석을 필리핀이 없앴다는 주장도 한다.

최근 두테르테 필리핀 대통령이 친중 외교를 펼치는 가운데 이 암초 근처에서 조업을 해도 괜찮다는 발언을 하며 앞으로 어찌 될지는 지켜봐야 할 상황. 그러나 1달도 안되어 필리핀 해군이 이곳의 순찰을 다시 한다는 걸 보아선... 

중국은 여기다가 인공섬까지 만든단다(...).

Evidence is mounting that China aims to build another island atop the Scarborough Shoal, an atoll just 140 miles off the coast of the Philippines’ capital of Manila and well within the Philippines’ 200-mile economic exclusion zone, that would extend China’s claims.
